After being named the top vehicle of any kind in the 2010 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards, the Suzuki Kizashi is out to dispel any notions of a “sophomore slump” with special Sport models that bring a new level of dynamic driving to the mid-size sedan segment.
Leveraging the impressive foundation of the Kizashi SE, the Sport GTS and Sport SLS versions get a comprehensive makeover aimed at delivering a confident, athletic driving experience. Upgrades include reworked sheet metal that now shows off a more muscular front fascia with chrome accents and a lower grille, body-side sill extensions, lower body-side moldings with chrome accents, a trunk-mount spoiler, lightweight Sport-specific 18-inch alloy wheels and a lowered ride height that raises the bar in terms of aerodynamics, enhanced performance and superior handling. The interior of the Kizashi Sport models has been revised as well, most notably by the addition of a sport steering wheel with a perforated-leather grip that transmits more road feel to the driver’s hands.
Providing the motivating force to Suzuki’s critically acclaimed sport sedan is the automaker’s responsive 2.4-liter I4. Mated to an efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT), the powerplant is good for a potent 180 hp, which gets a further boost to 185 ponies when hooked up to the Kizashi’s six-speed manual gearbox. The Sport GTS brings paddle shifters to the CVT for more driver control, along with premium upgrades like a one-touch open/close moonroof, fog lights, an up-level 425-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system and an available Bluetooth hands-free calling system with audio streaming.
At the top of the Kizashi range sits the Sports SLS, which is highlighted by further comfort/convenience touches, including leather appointments, three-stage heated front seats, a four-way power passenger seat, HomeLink universal garage door opener, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear parking sensors, exterior heated mirrors, an automatic day-night mirror, automatic on/off headlamps and available XM Satellite Radio.
Significantly, all Kizashi models also offer Suzuki’s next-generation intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Rarely found in cars in the Kizashi’s price range, this driver-activated AWD setup can immediately get power flowing to the car’s rear wheels for enhanced traction and cornering abilities. The system can send up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, although the exact split depends on feedback from the Kizashi’s sensors.
